Oneway=yes implicit or not?

From the how to map section: Add oneway=yes for clarity. As this is a new value for the junction key, many data consumers might not be able to assume the oneway property implicitly.

From the important considerations section: Further, generally rotaries and circular junctions have one-way traffic and should have the tag oneway=yes, however a circular junction with bi-directional traffic can be a valid junction to be tagged with junction=circular.

I'm very much in favor of not having a default oneway property, but to make it the same to any other normal road: oneway=no implied, unless specified otherwise. There are plenty of "roundabouts" with a (partially) bi-directional cycleway around it in The Netherlands for instance. See for instance also: https://josm.openstreetmap.de/ticket/21367

At the moment, the english version of the article contains a different recommendation than for example the german one. How should the maps be changed if oneway=yes is not implicit any more? -- Christf

"Erfordert" doesn't mean "implicit". Just the contrary: a "junction=circular" without an explicit oneway-tag is an error. But the need of a "oneway=no" wasn't seen before. But there exist such tagging even in Germany --Vincentius (talk) 10:36, 4 December 2025 (UTC)

Node or way?

Currently, the page specifies this tag should be used only on ways, but Tag:highway=mini_roundabout suggests using it with either a way or a node. Which one is right? --O-andras (talk) 12:18, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

I don't see it now... I was looking at the big table under "Possible misinterpretations", so I guess I misunderstood the "(...) junction=circular with a <node symbol> or (...)". --O-andras (talk) 08:45, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
