Bad tagging choice

I think this tag is not a good choice, it merely duplicates the same information you'll already get from the landuse and the shop tags. Better use something more specific according to the building typology, e.g. building=department_store, building=supermarket, building=clothing_store, building=shopping_mall, etc. --Dieterdreist (talk) 09:35, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

It is not bad tagging choice if you use it to mark building occupied by shops. Single building may serve multiple purposes. For example one building=yes can have both hospital (library) and pharmacy. You cannot use building=retail is this case, since library is not retail store.

You should use building=retail with buildings that contain multiple different stores "primarily used for selling goods". Placing amenity=library inside building=retail is most likely mistake. Xxzme (talk) 22:42, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Possible tagging mistakes

While "building=retail" might work if there's no better option, realistically there will very often be a better choice.

To classify the 5000 building=shop as "tagging errors" is surely just wrong. Was this attempt to "deprecate" this tagging discussed anywhere? SomeoneElse (talk) 12:19, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

In general, the template's name {{PossibleSynonym|*}} and instruction "verify if it could be tagged with another tag" reflects its intention more. It's not necessarily showing deprecation, only "possible". --- Kovposch (talk) 07:48, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
