iD Tagging Presets suggests to use man_made=street_cabinet + street_cabinet=postal_service as "Postal Relay Box". Further page text references a prior discussion, and current usage of amenity=relay_box is much less than the street cabinet version. Should we mark this one as prerecated in favour of street cabinet? The only issue I see is street cabinet is board, it could also possibly capture other kinds of postal service cabinets that aren't relay boxes. Aharvey (talk) 02:07, 28 February 2025 (UTC)

Ideally, the entire postal logistics should be tackled eventually. Ie to show whether a amenity=post_office does sorting, and deliveries on-site (eg postal_operation=* ); or is related to a dedicated amenity=post_depot spatially (eg amenity=post_office + post_depot=yes , post_depot=separate ) . Then eg postal_operation=relay can be added to these man_made=street_cabinet to replace amenity=relay_box together.

• post_office=sorting_center
• post_depot=sorting_center
• amenity=sorting_office

Or initially, we can try to solve the other utility=power for street_cabinet=traffic_control question Talk:Key:utility#Traffic_signals first. Eg move existing street_cabinet=* to elsewhere generic eg street_cabinet:function=* , as how utility=* have split it off for utilities. Changing street_cabinet=* to the actual equipment or functionality will allow eg street_cabinet=postal_relay + street_cabinet:function=postal_service to be used.
At the same time, the other question could be handled by eg street_cabinet=backup_power + street_cabinet:function=traffic_control (or street_cabinet:function=traffic_signals more directly), as I remember there's backup_generator=* yet with poor semantics for battery UPS.
For completeness, street_cabinet:function=utility could be added, if utility=* is diluted by not "true" utilities. That would be easier than negating all non-utilities, or querying all proper utilities specifically.

In any case, postal_service=* isn't a suitable candidate to detail street_cabinet=postal_service despite the usual pattern. It resembles the "post service" organizations cf military_service=* , post_office:service_provider=* . Proposal:Unified_postal_service_tagging proposed to unify post_office:*=* and amenity=parcel_locker services around parcel_*=* prefixing.

• Anecdotally, someone used postal_service=yes in Italy on highway=* roads to show whether the street is served.
