Use of Unicode characters in taxon value
About a year ago, a user edited this page to replace the lowercase alphabet “x” (U+0078) used to indicate hybrids with the multiplication sign (U+00D7). The multiplication sign is academically correct, but it seems that the majority of the entries in the global OSM database use the alphabet (maybe some of them were imported from an external source). Has there been any discussion on which one would be preferable to use?
- All ASCII:
Cerasus x yedonensis 'Somei-Yoshino'-- ex and straight quotes (easy to type in all editors/devices) - With Unicode:
Cerasus × yedonensis ‘Somei-Yoshino’-- multiplication and curved quotes (scientifically more correct)
Existing presets: European presets use ASCII. Japanese presets use Unicode. Czech presets do not contain hybrids. iD suggests both (using taginfo?).
