Moved discussion to talk:railways

I have moved the discussions about tagging to talk:railways to keep them all together. PeterIto 07:25, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

too much

Here should be only information about the key railway=*, not everything related to railways. This should be moved to Railways or other place. maro21 20:40, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Use of railway=site

Use of this tag has exploded recently, there are currently over 6000 instances. Having some clarification on the wiki on how this tag should be applied would be great.

It feels like in a lot of cases the tag is being used to group abandoned:railway, disused:railway and razed:railway tags but to me this doesn't make much sense unless the feature is still contained or managed in some way within the railway network (e.g. a disused station or sidings on an active line).

Additionally it is also causing some map renders to show a station there, although I apricate this is an issue with how they're parsing the data. --Ohmanger (talk) 11:35, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

In Finland it is used to map operating points such as passing loops on single line sections. They are official operating points of the railway and sometimes trains are scheduled to stop there for operating purposes (without loading/unloading of passengers or cargo). There was a proposal to use railway=technical_station but it has been abandoned, but in Sweden passing loops are currently mapped as such (even though not supported by renderers like OpenRailwayMap).
