traffic_calming=markings may be used to mark a place on a highway=* where psychological traffic calming measures in the form of non-physical markings are placed to slow down traffic. Often these occur in the form of painted warnings and advices — such as 'school' or 'slow' — or as a decorative road surface intended to increase the cognitive load of driving there (with the effect of slowing down most drivers).

Avoid this value if the traffic calming markings are combined with physical measures; such as traffic_calming=table or traffic_calming=bump. In those cases, use those values instead. Such measures tend to be marked or delineated in any case.
