Status: in use

A saltbox roof is an asymmetrical gabled roof in which one roof plane extends significantly lower than the other, forming a continuous single slope from the ridge to the eaves on one side. This is also known as a catslide roof.

Minor variation

The long sloping side may gradually become slightly shallower toward the eaves, or show a gentle flare near the edge. As long as there is no distinct break line creating two separate planes, this remains a saltbox roof.

Tagging

Use roof:shape=saltbox on a building=* outline or building:part=*. Optional refinements: roof:orientation=* and other roof:*=* keys for pitch, colour, and material.

Examples

Common tagging mistakes

Some older experimental pages, for example OSM-4D/Roof_table#Subtype_3, use the word “saltbox” for several different roof geometries. That draft is not part of the established tagging scheme, has seen little maintenance for years. The definitions there can conflict with this page and may have led to inconsistent tags in the database. Use roof:shape=saltbox only for an asymmetrical gabled roof with a single continuous long slope on one side.
