An area where a notable flower species grow naturally. This tag is controversial because mapping perishable or temporary objects is not good OSM practice. However, it has been argued that the tag makes sense in some climates where particular species re-occur in particular areas. The tag is being used by a small number of mappers.

Man made flower plantations should be tagged with landuse=flowerbed or landuse=farmland with crop=flowers.

A similar tag, `natural=flower` (a singular flower rather than plural "flowers"), has a blank and abandoned proposal draft and is not in use.

Unresolved issues

  • There is currently no consensus nor de-facto way on how to tag the flower's bloom or occurrence season. A flower field is often not verifiable outside its season.
  • Depending on the climate and the species, objective verifiability may vary on a spectrum, where some cases may consistently and distinctly bloom in a particular area seasonally, while others shift, or vary in quantity per season.
