A tree pit is a designated area for planting trees, typically found in urban settings. The planting soil is often slightly below-grade and may be covered with a metal structure or a loose covering, such as gravel or wood chips. Tree pits may include underground root barriers that direct the roots downwards, preventing damage to nearby structures.
A tree pit is often separated from the surrounding road or sidewalk by a barrier=kerb, barrier=fence, benches, or another type of barrier.
A tree pit does not necessarily contain a tree at all times. For example, a tree may have been removed because it was unhealthy, or planting may not yet have taken place.
