A cycleway and sidewalk/footway related tag with undefined meaning.

Interpretation

Several different meanings/intentions have been proposed/presented in discussions, such as:

• the cycleway is a separately mapped cycle track
• the cycleway is a multi-use path
• the cycleway runs parallel to a carriageway
• the cycleway facility for the parallel carriageway is supplied by the sidewalk
• the cycleway functions as the pedestrian facility (sidewalk) for a parallel carriageway
• the cycleway is separated from a parallel carriageway by a kerb
• providing symmetry with sidewalk=separate on a parallel carriageway

Many of these intentions overlap, some are conflicting, and several can be true at the same time.

footway=sidewalk and cycleway=sidewalk - are also used on highway=path segregated=yes bicycle=designated foot=designated but some people use path=sidewalk in such case (often fuelled by Osmose false positive)

Geovelo

The french national cycling data producer and maintainer uses this tag for cases with the three following conditions reunited:

• traffic_sign=FR:B22a, traffic_sign=FR:C113, or pictogram on ground
• no physical separation between pedestrian and cyclists
• different surface (colour included)

If the last condition isn't true, then highway=cycleway and bicycle=yes is preferred.

Tagging alternatives

Depending on the intended meaning (see above), other well-defined and unambiguous tags can be used.

• highway=* + cycleway=track (on a shared line with a carriageway) - there is a cycle track
• highway=cycleway + is_sidepath=yes - runs parallel to a carriageway
• highway=cycleway + separation=kerb - is separated by a kerb
• highway=cycleway + foot=designated / highway=path + bicycle=designated + foot=designated - is a multi-use path
• highway=cycleway + foot=yes - the cycleway functions as the pedestrian facility
• highway=footway + footway=sidewalk + bicycle=yes - the sidewalk functions as the bicycle facility
