The tag building=gauge_house can be used to tag a gauge house (sometimes spelled gagehouse in the US), a small structure sheltering stream gauge or tide gauge equipment.
How to map
Draw the outline of the building and tag it as building=gauge_house. To tag the station itself, use man_made=monitoring_station + monitoring:water_level=yes on a node inside of the gauge house.
Sometimes the gauge house is directly over the water with the gauge inside, but often the gauge is external and the "gauge house" may be some distance away. If the equipment is in a box instead of a building, use man_made=street_cabinet instead.
If the monitoring station is no longer active but the gauge house remains, leave the building=gauge_house feature intact. Consider mapping the former station as disused:man_made=monitoring_station to indicate the status of the facility.
