A
carport is a covered structure used to offer limited protection to vehicles, primarily cars, from the elements. The structure can either be free standing or attached to a wall. Unlike most structures a carport does not have four walls, and usually has one or two.
In OSM context, a carport is a subtype of building=roof.
How to map
For a free-standing carport: Map an
area and add building=carport. Usage on
nodes is possible but not recommended.
If the carport is part of a building: Use building:part=carport as described in Simple 3D buildings.
The carport might provide more than one parking space. It is not necessary that the carport is currently used for vehicle parking, the tag only describes the building type. Many mappers don't include roof overhang in the building outline, drawing the walls instead. On sides of a carport without walls the extend of the roof should used for the outline.
Additional attributes
Carports in a parking area
When a carport is located in an area clearly intended for vehicle parking and that would, without the presence of the carports, be mapped as amenity=parking or amenity=bicycle_parking ... , two solutions are possible:
- map the parking area in the traditional way, usually
amenity=parking+parking=surfaceoramenity=parking+parking=street_side, and add an
with building=carportover the area equipped with carports. - if the entire parking area is equipped with carports, consider directly mapping
amenity=parking+parking=carports.
