Marks an area of a public transportation district e.g. the operating area of a transit authority which e.g. controls pricing or lines.
Usage in Germany
Germany is split into multiple
Verkehrsverbünde which control pricing and timetables for regional transportation and also are used for the value in network=* of stops and routes. A boundary=public_transport is primarily used to mark the operational ranges of of the individual Verkehrsverbünde.
They're also used to mark transitional areas (areas where tickets of multiple Verkehrsverbünde are valid). Such areas are tagged as public_transport=transitional_area with public_transport:transitional_area:from=* marking the outer association and public_transport:transitional_area:to=* the inner association. Example: Düren is located inside the Aachener Verkehrsverbund (AVV) but tickets for Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) are also valid there. The corresponding transitional area has the VRS (outer) as the from value and AVV as the to value (inner).
