barrier=floating_boom is used to tag a floating
boom: a chain, cable, line of buoys, or any other obstacle designed to float on the surface of a body of water. Floating booms may be deployed to block the passage of people, watercraft, debris, oil, etc. They are common above dams and water intakes, and around some leisure=swimming_area features.
How to map
Draw a way along the barrier and tag it barrier=floating_boom. Floating booms are often flexible and their shapes may change based on the flow of the water, so just map the "normal" or "average" shape. Alternatively, just tag the node where the waterway crosses the barrier as barrier=floating_boom.
The tag applies even if barrier is not actively floating, e.g. in a dry reservoir. If the barrier is not intended to float, consider using another barrier=* tag like barrier=chain.
Rendering
OpenTrailMap renders each barrier=floating_boom way in orange as a thick round-dashed line atop a thin solid line, mimicking a string of buoys.
Alternative tags
Some mappers use waterway=floating_barrier to tag these features. Some mappers also add the seamark tag seamark:obstruction:category=boom.
Note that the term "boom" can also refer to other types barriers, such as barrier=lift_gate.
