A health post (a.k.a. "Community Health Post", "Health Station", "Health Center") is a community-based service for providing health and wellness for local residents where basic health services are primarily provided by government healthcare workers other than physicians. In many cases, a rota of medical professionals (doctors, dentists, nurses, optometrists, etc.) visit the community to provide specific medical services, but the regular, primary services are more limited: midwifery, health counseling, immunization, community awareness and wellness education.

Front-line health care actors may vary from one facility to another, and can include one or a combination of: nurses, midwives, accredited local community health workers, or somebody with specialized or basic life support training. However, it is generally not feasible to expect full-time, on-site physicians.

In terms of staff size, health posts are smaller than clinics and hospitals, and unlikely to have emergency care facilities beyond first aid administration. In cases of emergency, an ambulance may be available to transport patients to the nearest hospital.

By 2022, the tag is widely used globally (visualize usage with Overpass: regular or Ultra), particularly in Africa and Asia.

How to map

Use the tag amenity=health_post on a node node placed at the approximate location of a shared building, or on a closed way (area) area drawn around the perimeter of the building.

For facilities occupying a dedicated building, combine the tags: building=yes + amenity=health_post on the closed way (area) area representing the building.

In addition, mappers may indicate one or more primary care providers:

The information about the services the facility provides may be captured using healthcare:speciality=*, for example:

Alternative tagging

There are mappers who tag the same feature using healthcare=* tags, but that approach is unable to specify the primary care provider(s) available. See comparative usage below:

amenity=health_post healthcare=health_post
