Payyannur, located in the northern part of Kannur district and close to Kasaragod, is a serene coastal town marked by the charm of North Kerala’s shoreline. Known as the land of Theyyam, Payyannur is deeply rooted in the ritualistic performance traditions of North Malabar, where elaborate costumes, rhythmic movements, and spiritual symbolism come together in a vibrant celebration of heritage. The nearby Kunjimangalam region is home to extensive mangrove forests—the largest mangrove stretch in Kerala—showcasing the area’s ecological richness. As the host of the State of the Map Kerala 2025 edition, Payyannur highlights not only the cultural depth but also the natural diversity that defines this distinct corner of Kerala.

The Department of Geography of Kannur University was established in 2003, is functioning at Swami Anandatheertha Campus, Payyannur of Kannur University. At present, the Department is offering M.Sc in Geography, Ph.D in Geography, Five-Year Integrated Masters Programme in Geography and Post Graduate Diploma in Geoinformatics for Spatial Planning. The Department of geography with a vision of achieving excellence and to promote professional education in the field of geography, has been developing itself with better infrastructural facilities and qualified faculties for undertaking a full range of degree programmes from Graduation to Ph.D courses in Geography. The Department was able to conduct academic and research oriented activities in many emerging and frontier areas of geography and there are many agendas to be fulfilled in this regard. Behind every successful achievements of the Department the infrastructural facilities and sincere effort of faculties always stood as a strong support. At present, the Department of Geography is well equipped with the basic infrastructural facilities, which include smart classrooms, library, GIS and Remote Sensing lab, Cartography lab, and Geodesy lab. The Department is planning for conducting multiple courses in the future, which requires the development of the Department of Geography as a Center of Excellence.

How to reach to Venue?
Bus
Both K.S.R.T.C and Private buses are available to Edat, which is approximately 1.2 K.M from University entrance,Buses are available to here from Kannur as well as Payyannur town. Auto rikcshaw is available from Edat bus stop to venue.
Rail
Payyannur railway station is the nearest one to the venue, which is, 6.5 K.M. away from the venue. Auto rickshaw is available at the railway station. Also buses are available to Payyannur town.
Not all trains have stop at Payyannur Railway Station. The nearest major station is Kannur railway Station, which is 36 K.M. away from the venue. Buses (Ourple coloured buses as well as KSRTC buses) are available from the Thavakkara New Bus Stand, which is 800m away from Kannur Railway Station.
