questions
Thanks for writing up this page! A few questions:
- Is
railway:signal:train_protection:ref=*a typo? I think it should just beref=*, like every other rail signal? - there are 3 variants of the arrow depending of the
railway:signal:position=*, which might be worth mentioning:
railway:signal:position=overhead/bridge
railway:signal:position=left
railway:signal:position=right - it's not just OpenRailwayMap-vector that needs updating, the "old" / "raster" / ".org" project also supports the existing tags and needs updating
- Are the "transition markers" actually standardised? It seems like every country has their own signs.
- if you want more example photos, the German wikipedia has an excellent page and there are heaps of photos in this category on commons
- should we also define the CBTC/TVM markers, or is that out of scope? (
) They are also used in several countries and continents (🇬🇧, 🇫🇷, 🇧🇪, 🇦🇺, 🇳🇱, 🇩🇪, 🇰🇷, and probably more)

Thank you for your feedback!
- I see that in Italy sometimes the ETCS markers have different ref compared to the "standard" signal, for example the name of the place instead of the number only. So it's there to add some flexibilty, but I guess that ref works too. Probably
railway:signal:train_protection:caption=*is a better way to describe that. - I thought that fell into the standard signal tagging, like the direction and so.
- I thought that the ".org" was not really supported anymore, but after checking it seems that some issues and PR are getting solved, so I'll add to the list. It would ease the implementation in countries where those markers are not rendered yet.
- Level transition markers are standard and required for ETCS, but the signals indicating the (upcoming) begin or end of ETCS and switch to a national system are not standardized.
- I would try to focus just on ETCS for now, passing this proposal will not be easy so I wouldn't add to many things in one proposal.

- Awesome, I think you've answered all my questions! Regarding the
ref=*- I agree,*:captionis also more widely supported GitHub --Kylenz 11:48, 5 December 2025 (UTC)
