Proposal
This proposal aims at streamlining the current tagging of farm buildings that can be confusing and is incomplete. More precisely it tackles the mapping of stables (as in: building where animals stay during a certain time).
Currently the mapping of farmyard and farmland is well described by landuse=farmyard.
But a corresponding description of a tagging-scheme for buildings on a farm is missing. building=farm provides the best overview:

While building=barn,building=farm_auxiliary and building=farm seem reasonable an useful the tagging of stables can be improved:
- It is incomplete because it does not respect all domestic animals.
- The use of a stable may also be subject abrupt change (livestock in the stable may be changed at any time).
- The scheme is confusing because stable can refer to stable for horses just as well as a stable for any livestock.
I therefore propose the following changes:
- Change the description of
building=stableto incorporate any cover for animals. - Add the
animal=*tobuilding=stableto specify the animal. This also makes it complient withtourism=zoo. - Deprecate
building=sty,building=styand any there like
Rationale
The rationale is the same as the current tags. It only simplifies the mapping of stables and makes it more flexible by using the animal=* tag.
Location and change in numbers of stables for different animals could be an interesting research topic. Also this provides information on what animals to expect on a farm that is to be visited.
Examples
Can be found on most farms with livestock as well as in zoos and private gardens.
