Parking is a place where people can park their vehicle.

See parking=* for the parking key that is used to specify the type of parking facility.

How to map

Minimal tagging is just to map a node with amenity=parking or another parking tag like amenity=bicycle_parking, depending on the type of parking.

If possible, parking should be mapped with an area and tagged with additional properties and detail. Access ways to areas can be mapped using highway=service. Street parking, particularly in the form of a parking lane or highway shoulder, can instead be mapped via tags on the road way (highway=*) itself using parking:*=*.

Additional tags

The parking=* key can be used together with amenity=parking to specify the type of parking facility. Most used values are:

• parking=surface
• parking=underground
• parking=multi-storey
• parking=street_side
• parking=lane

There also exist other values which are typically used in combination with street parking but also are valid for amenity=parking if unsupported by many tools (including OSM mainstays like Carto and iD). These are:

• parking=on_kerb
• parking=half_on_kerb
• parking=shoulder
• parking=layby

Use cases

Motor vehicles / Cars

• amenity=parking - The main tag covering most conventional car parks, coach parks etc. Many additional tags are listed on this page.
• amenity=parking_space - Can be used to map individual parking spaces within an area of amenity=parking or can be added to a relation of the type site=parking.
• amenity=motorcycle_parking - For parking areas specifically for motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, etc.
• parking:left=*, parking:right=* or parking:both=* - For street parking along a highway=*.

Bicycles

• amenity=bicycle_parking - For metal hoops and other types of bicycle parking facilities.

• amenity=bicycle_rental - For docking stations, or other places where you can park a rental bike.
• amenity=mobility_hub - For municipal mandatory assigned parking-areas usually rental e-bikes, e-scooters, (e-)cargobikes
  • Mandatory as in: fine-able if you do not park: right vehicle in right assigned parking space and within boundaries of particular parking spot

Stroller

• amenity=stroller_parking - For metal hoops, shacks and other types of designated stroller parking facilities.

Boats

• See Harbour tags.
• amenity=boat_storage - For dry-land boat "parking".

Private/residential parking

• amenity=parking + access=private - Access tags can be applied to any parking facility as needed.

• building=garage - For single-user or single-owner private garage building.

• building=garages - For buildings which are blocks of private garages, where each garage space has a different owner.
