Jump to navigation Jump to search

Scope

Creation of an Alpine Club Map for the region around el Chaltén (including the area around the peaks of Cerro Torre and Fitz Roy).

We are staff, students, and former students of the Institute of Cartography at the TU Dresden.

Activities

Our focus is on mapping and improving ways, buildings, rivers, and POIs from OpenStreetMap to create a high-quality map. We will solve open issues on OpenStreetMap.org and contribute our knowledge from our fieldwork in the region. If you are interested or have concerns, please contact Jakob Listabarth.

Start

March 2025

Hashtag

#CTFR2025

Area

Around El Chaltén and the Parque Nacional de los Glaciares.

Focus on map features

  • Hiking paths
  • Rivers
  • POIs
  • Buildings
  • Partly the land coverage

  • JOSM

Data collection

  • Public data (aerial images) for mapping with OSM
  • Field work using printed maps for notes

Methods for collecting names

For the addition of names, names of unnamed objects were searched for in guidebooks, maps and descriptions, and locals were interviewed. For this purpose, historical sources were also consulted in order not to draw false conclusions and to gather contextual knowledge.
