openclimbing.org is a web and mobile app for mapping climbing areas and creating interactive climbing guides. All data is open and anyone can edit it – similar to Wikipedia.
Application is developed as open-source, it uses OpenStreetMap for storing climbing routes and images are shared via Wikimedia Commons, which allows easy and efficient sharing of information.
It uses climbing tags and climbing path notation.
Features
- Open data only - all climbing guides are saved only in public databases OpenStreetMap and Wikimedia Commons
- Cartographic first approach - Showing all climbing areas / crags / routes / gyms / via ferratas on the map
- Climbing editor for drawing climbing routes in the photo (everything is saved in OSM according to wikimedia_commons:path schema)
- 3D view of the map
- Grade conversion - it's possible to convert all gradings to your favorite grading system
- Crag filtering
- Logbook - User can log his ticks (beta - only saved in the browser)
- Open-source
Technical overview
We are extensively using the existing tagging from OSM Wiki page Climbing and sport=climbing.
The application has three technical components:
- Feature Panel - shows overview of the climbing=area, climbing=crag and climbing=route_bottom along with all images from many possible sources (Wikimedia Commons, image=*, street view services, etc.)
- Climbing Dialog - shows detailed topo for relations climbing=crag
showing each member route and its wikimedia_commons:path over the image from Wikimedia Commons. Also contains an editor which saves the data directly to OSM.
- Climbing Tiles - offers the vector slippy map of custom design.
- Almost every feature related to climbing is displayed with crag icon (▲) over the map, climbing=area with the double mountain icon (⛰️).
- Areas are rendered up to two levels deep - areas and super-areas.
- Features with images are blue/red.
- Specific routes are colored according to their grade in any classification system.
- via ferratas and climbing gyms are shown with separate icons.
