Proposal
I am proposing to standardize the tagging of ceremonial gates across OpenStreetMap. In particular, I am proposing the following changes:
- man_made = Torii -> man_made = ceremonial_gate ceremonial_gate=torii
- man_made = Paifang -> man_made = ceremonial_gate ceremonial_gate=paifang
- man_made = Honsalmun -> man_made = ceremonial_gate ceremonial_gate=honsalmun
- man_made = Iljumun -> man_made = ceremonial_gate ceremonial_gate=iljumun
Rationale
Different cultures use different tags for ceremonial gates, but the general concept is the same. Standardizing on man_made=ceremonial_gate with a subtag ceremonial_gate=* improves data consistency, searchability, and data quality.
I will take the following measures to guarantee community support and minimize the risk of incorrect edits:
- I will follow the Automated Edits code of conduct.
- I have created this page to document this automatic edit.
- I will discuss this edit on the relevant regional and cultural forums if needed.
Technical implementation
- I will use JOSM combined with Overpass to select the objects.
- I will download all objects with man_made=Torii, man_made=Paifang, man_made=Honsalmun, and man_made=Iljumun via Overpass, manually verify them, and apply the change to man_made=ceremonial_gate while setting ceremonial_gate=* accordingly.
- I will upload the changes within one changeset, tagged with "mechanical=yes" and "comment=Standardize ceremonial gates tagging, see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:man_made%3Dceremonial_gate".
- This is expected to be a one-time edit. If further standardization is required, it will be discussed with the community before execution.
- I will allow users to opt-out. Users may contact me if they prefer certain objects not to be edited.
Discussion
A perfunctory discussion was started on the community forum.
