This tag indicates the number of swimming lanes, typically within a leisure=swimming_pool. It does not allow to distinguish between lanes of different length.
Please put a note=* if the number of official lanes ("T"-s at the bottom) differ from the usual pool configuration.
History
This key was coined out of an assumption that lanes=* should only be used for highway=* ways. [1] However, lanes=* is also routinely used for other non-navigable features, such as leisure=track multipolygons. As of July 2025, 70 pools are tagged with lanes=* and 410 with swimming_lanes=*. [2]
