Collaborative mapping of Vila Rural Lafayette PB Brazil
Presentation
Wiki OSM page to detail the collaborative mapping of the Vila Rural (VPR) Lafayette, Paraíba, Brazil.

This collaborative mapping is the result of a partnership between the Virtual Institute for Sustainable Development - IVIDES.org, its information technology consulting company IVIDES DATA and the Social Project Management Center of the Federal University of São Francisco Valley - NGPS/Univasf.
The Context
As this is a post-removal context, the PISF communities that were resettled in rural productive villages (VPRs) need to build relationships and dynamics of appropriation of the new territories.
The first area of interest (AOI) of the mapping campaign, the Lafayette Rural Productive Village (VPR), located in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, was one of the sites planned and implemented under the Population Resettlement Program of the São Francisco Integration Project (PBA-8 of the PISF), implemented by the Federal Government of Brazil, with the aim of resettling part of the populations impacted by the works. As a result of the PISF works, more than 800 families opted for resettlement in 18 VPRs.
The general layout of the Lafayette VPR includes residential areas, agricultural areas, irrigated plots, areas for collective use, permanent protection areas, and areas for sustainable use. The aforementioned 18 PISF VPRs are quite similar to each other in terms of urban design, which is why the methodology developed from the experience of mapping the Lafayette VPR can be replicated for the other PISF villages. The development and application of this methodology is, therefore, the main objective of this process.
In the VPRs, which today constitute cartographic voids, resettled families carry out actions related to socio-productive reintegration. The collaborative mapping of the Lafayette VPR therefore integrates these processes.
Profile of those responsible for mapping
The Social Project Management Center at the Federal University of Vale do São Francisco (NGPS/Univasf) works in low-income areas, providing rural extension services and technical assistance to communities resettled under the São Francisco River Integration Project (PISF). The center has provided advisory services for the development of socioeconomic projects involving local production processes and populations in the area of interest of the PISF. More information is available at the end of this page.
The Virtual Institute for Sustainable Development (IVIDES.org) is a virtual research institute that has been developing mapping campaigns and programs for collaborative mapping, using free software and open data, with a preference for the OpenStreetMap cartographic database and related applications. Its institutional portal provides public information on active and completed projects, as well as instructional material on mapping with OSM. Since 2004, IVIDES DATA has been registered officially (CNPJ 56.127.866/0001-12) as a small IT consulting company based in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), providing technical assistance and coordination of research projects for clients and partners in Brazil and other countries. More information is available at the end of this page.

Mapping objectives
General objective
Apply the mapping methodology developed by the IVIDES DATA company (technical guidance for mapping and feature validation) and NGPS (field data collection and mapping with programs that operate with OSM) in the mapping campaign of 18 VPR of the PISF.
Specific Objectives
Systematic
- Collect data in situ, not yet included in the OSM cartographic database, for the area of interest (AOI);
- Insert features of the general arrangements of the PISF VPRs into the OSM database, from the NGPS collection;
- Insert features related to systematic mapping that are missing from OSM; and
- Validate the features inserted during the campaign.
Thematic
- Spatialize the agroecological arrangement actions present in the territories, using the OSM cartographic database; and
- Spatialize the results of the socio-productive diagnosis carried out by the NGPS team, with the help of uMap.

Methodology
The methodology is based on the use of open technologies and collaborative mapping practices, linking university extension and community planning. For the methodological construction and application of mapping planning, NGPS relied on the support and guidance of the IVIDES.org Institute and the IT company IVIDES DATA, in the person of Dr. Raquel Dezidério Souto.
According to the plan, the mapping was structured in two stages: mapping and validation of the features of interest to the project.
In the mapping stage, the features will be mapped on OpenStreetMap, with the help of the HOT Tasking Manager and the JOSM and iD editors. Validation, in turn, will be carried out with the help of JOSM, OSMCha, and other specific programs.
To map this area of interest, namely VPR Lafayette, satellite images (Bing and Esri), the NGPS/Univasf database, and field surveys with GNSS receivers conducted by the core team will be used.
For this project, a mapping label scheme was developed, which can be accessed at the link below. The scheme followed the international OSM standards, available on the OSM Wiki - Map Features, considering the needs of the mapping project for this AOI.
The table below shows the main resources to be used in mapping the PISF's Rural Productive Villages (VPRs), in accordance with the specific objectives of the mapping.
| Phases/ objectives | Recursos |
| 1. Collect data in situ, still missing from the OSM cartographic database, for the area of interest (AOI). | Formulário |
| 2. Insert the features of the general arrangements of the PISF VPRs into the OSM database, sourced from the NGPS collection. | Editores JOSM e iD |
| 3. Insert features related to systematic mapping that are missing from OSM. | Editores JOSM e iD |
| 4. Validate the features mapped in OSM for this AOI. | Editor JOSM, OSMCha, ... |
| 5. Spatialize the actions of agroecological arrangements present in the territories, using the OSM cartographic base. | Editores JOSM e iD |
| 6. Spatialize the results of the socio-productive diagnosis of the PISF's VPRs and other geoinformation relevant to the project, with the aid of a web map development platform. | uMap |
