Changeset When Comment

Makes sense about the REV, and you might be right about the Mapbox update frequency. As for this particular changeset, I don't think there's a particularly urgent need to change the current configuration so maybe we can plan on revisiting the issue when Rosemont gets around to updating the south portion like you mentioned.

In the meantime I'll try using tags next time I want to map a bike path in the area.

I don't know the specifics of how Bixi/Mapbox goes about rendering their map, but experimentally what I was observing was that making changes to the tagging of existing bike paths to reflect infrastructure changes was not having any effect (e.g going from cycleway=shared_lane to cycleway=lane).

I agree with the point of not "tagging for the renderer", however I would argue that in this case both approaches have merit. After all, the actual on-street configuration of the bike path on 1re avenue is not meaningfully different from many parts of the REV on Saint-Denis and Bellechasse. The wiki itself seems to be agnostic about which approach is preferred for bike paths: osm.wiki/Bicycle#Cycle_features

Given that the issue isn't necessarily super clear-cut, from a purely pragmatic point of view I think there some merit to taking into consideration how either scheme interacts with one of the more prominent use cases for OpenStreetMap in Montreal (especially as it relates to the cycling network).

I hope this comment doesn't come across as confrontational. I am genuinely trying to contribute in good faith to improving OpenStreetMap and I welcome your point of view on the issue.

I understand your point. In the case of this section of 1re avenue, the bike path is protected by either bollards or a row of parked cars+door buffer zone so I felt it was justified.

I have to confess that a secondary motivation for this change was to get the bike path to render correctly in the Bixi app, which uses OpenStreetMap through Mapbox. For some reason using tagging alone seems to produce mixed results as to whether the changes are actually reflected in their map updates.
