The database for the namefinder search engine on the main page hasn't been updated since January due to lack of time by the maintainer. I'm not quite sure what the current state of the whole system is (I believe that the developer is still intending to work on it and also that Cloudmade are also working on their own search engine).

Thanks, is there anything I can do? I have some experience with commerical GIS systems & lots of time doing java development. I'd be happy to help if someone can give me some idea of whats needed.

The last update I can find is from last month - http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2009-July/038643.html - noting that the index was being rebuilt, and would take another couple of weeks.

I am indeed working on it, but the first two attempts failed - the size of the data has increased considerably since the last full reload and this is causing a number of new problems.
