Yeah sure, "alternate" was better than under the main relation, but maybe "facilities" would be another improvement

local save & restore - another thing I've learnt!
thanks

thanks, I use the JOSM relations editor, but hadn't tried that button.
I'll get onto your odds & sods.
Thanks again
Ian

Oh right - how do you get JOSM to do that? (I only operate on the top 2% of JOSM capabilties I'm sure)

122138968 over 3 years ago

You've put it all in sequence! Fantastic - I have been wanting to do that for ages. I have tackled bits-at-a-time, but never tackled the whole lot. I presume it was a purely manual exercise? Do you use JOSM?

OK, I think I understand:
- your changes were not really about my last changeset, just a general cleanup and you contacted me because Iwork on the relation a bit - correct?
- You've tagged a lot of ways you're suggesting could go into Munda Biddi Alternate, but have left them in Munda Biddi - but just down the bottom.
- You're not ure what to with a few random bits and pieces - also down the bottom.

thanks for your work

Ian

Yes, I understand. (I hope you haven't walked it as it is a mountain bike track :-) )
I can see a bunch of miscellaneous items like buildings etc down the bottom. Roughly how many items are we talking about that you moved? half-a-dozen? 50?
Were your changes related to the changes I made? - or just a general cleanup-type change?

I'm sorry. I have pondered your message and am not sure what you mean. Did I add some stuff to the Munda Biddi Trail relation when I should have been adding it to Munda Biddi Alternate ? - and you've moved them into Munda Biddi Alternate ?

Ian

Nowadays, I am more disciplined, and try to add a source:name=roadsign attribute.

61843017 over 3 years ago

G'day Michael,
I struggle to remember what I did last week, so have no precise memories of the trip we did. However, my GPS tracks show that we travelled down that road in August 2018, and that I recorded "Collets Rd" as a waypoint as we turned-off Devils Creek Rd (I record waypoints where there is something for me to update in OSM). I can only assume I recorded that based on a road sign at the junction (I cannot imagine any other reason for me doing so).
regards
Ian

Update Munda Biddi for the Larego mine realignment

G'day, I just drove up Albany Hwy and (as we passed by at 110kph), I could not see any evidence of a fuel station on the corner of Chinninup Rd as you created on Feb 1st last year. Could you please clarify what you intended for this location ?
thanks

On (another) constructive note, I have used that "surface=metal" tag on other roads. I don't have the skills with the OSM database to find them. Are you able to help locate and fix these instances? (change them to "paved" I suppose)

81247026 over 5 years ago

As a mature-aged, frequent and well-intentioned contributor to OSM, even after a night's sleep, I'm still pissed-off with the tone of your edit comment. I expect (and welcome) people pointing-out that I am doing something wrong because I would be embarrassed to find out I had been making the same mistake over-and-over again for years, and had made a mess within OSM.

In order to limit the bad feeling and broken relationships within the OSM community, your edit comment could have been written along the following lines:

"Thanks for your edit, however:
1. You made a typo in the word Darkan (Darkin) which I have corrected - no problem.
2. You have tagged "surface=metal". The OSM Wiki describes "metal" as meaning just that (eg steel). What were you intending with this tag?
3. You have changed the name to "Darkan-Collie Road" - what triggered you to change it to this? (I reckon the name should be...because....)."

Note:
- neutral tone
- no tongue lashing
- no sarcasm
- no emotion

I think even on a bad day, I would not be offended by the tone of a message written in such a way. I would also feel a tad embrarrassed that I made the typo, and that I hadn't checked the OSM Wiki mefore using the tag "metal". We could have started a constructive discussion on what the road name should be.

The polite "thanks for your edit" was quickly washed away with an aggressive attack there.
Of course I don't intend to go about making mistaken edits - who intends to do mistaken edits? The tone of your comments certainly pissed me off. I apologise for the typo in Darkan. I don't claim to be 100% perfect in what I do in OSM - just to make it better than when I found it. In this case, that didn't happen.
As far as the surface of the road being "metal" - I assumed "metal" refer to the "metalled roads" we have in the country. I see now that I was wrong - yet another humble apology from me.

I would have only changed the name of the road because that is what the sign on Albany Highway says. I thought we are meant to map "what is on the ground", and yet you say that the sign is wrong? What are we meant to be mapping.

While I am very happy to be picked-up on my mistakes, I would ask that next time you do it in a more tactful way (sarcasm has no place in correcting wayward users) that doesn't piss me off quite as much as you have on this occasion.

Treadly, I am trying to maintain an up-to-date GPX file of the Munda Biddi Trail for the MBT Foundation, and looking at changes in OSM related to the Munda Biddi. I notice on 18 Aug, you made a change that might be related. I'm still learning about analysing changesets, but it looks like you removed the name Munda Biddi Trail from the path that follows around the Collie River. Do you know for sure whether this is or isn't part of the trail? (The Munda Biddi Alternate Route stopped well short of Collie until I extended it up to the first Collie River crossing in the last day or so, but I need to finish it through to Soldiers Park.
thanks

How come you were notified of my change? I'm thinking that as part of the process of trying to maintain an up-to-date GPX of the whole trail, it would be good to know if anyone changed the Munda Biddi route relation. Do you know if that is possible ?

75805573 about 6 years ago

I am also trying to maintain a more up-to-date GPX file of the whole route than the one on the government website. You don't happen to have a GPX file encompassing this "new" alignment do you?

75805573 about 6 years ago

Ewen, I have reverted the change. We were basing our route data in the first instance from the official DBCA GPX file on the government website (which is nearly 18 months old). The original route was down Scarp Rd, so the alignment you rode must be "new-ish" (ie a change after the original alignment. Based on your advice (and the fact someone has mapped it out to the west), I believe that more than the DBCA GPX file.
