Any photo of the printed map? It could become a Featured OSM image. :-)

Using turtle graphics to map buildings

@Andy, at very large scales and at latitudes far from the poles, I doubt that the difference between spherical mercator and true mercator would be noticeable.

If you suspect someone has been tracing from Google ..

Well, if the names are wrong in the first place--whether or not the wrongness matches Google's or not--then you should correct them.

Need more accurate GPS track for Forum Robinson Svc Rd

Getting a nice track of the service road will be hard since Forum Robinsons is surrounded by tall buildings.

Cartography Sticker

@!i!, in the Philippines, gated residential communities with security are often called "villages".

1st day official upload to OSM Philippines

Welcome! Thanks for adding data in Atimonan, Quezon. OpenStreetMap could definitely use a lot of help in the provinces. :-)

If you have any questions or problems, you should ask the Philippine OSM mailing list. I'm sure you've seen the link going there already on the Wiki.

Happy mapping! And maybe you might want to join one of our mapping parties soon. :-)

Let's go!

Tracks of already mapped areas? They're useful in many ways. Here's a couple: they can provide independent proof about the location of roads, and people can mine the data for speed analysis. :-)

wikiptravel removing links to openstreetmap

They are just following their policy. On their external links guidelines, they said not to link to map services (or even supporting pages such as the OSM wiki). It doesn't matter that OSM is CC-BY-SA and linking to a wikiproject page on OSM from a travel guide doesn't help their readers.

Wikipedia full of copyrighted, unattributed maps

Well, Wikimedia being based in the US takes the US position on copyright that facts are uncopyrightable. So you can take encyclopedic facts and rewrite them in your own words just as you can copy map facts, but not the map styles and other representation, and present them in your own style.

OSM, being a UK-initiated project, also considers the EU-database rights and UK's sweat-of-the-brow view on copyright so OSM has to be stricter with respect to facts taken from a database.

Mabalacat - Angeles Pampanga Update

Unfortunately, given Yahoo's financial problems, it's unlikely that they will be getting new satellite imagery soon. So the best bet is to track roads using GPS.

At least we know that some of the spammers are not bots.

Google Street Maps

Using Google Maps as a reference site is a no-no everywhere, not just in San Salvador.

London Friends

Spam. signed up for osm for the sole purpose of promoting a website.

Nokia vs Google

At least in my country, Nokia's Navteq data is still using the no-good-for-navigation VMAP0 public domain dataset. So unless they manage to get better data, their map app is useless. A shame since Nokia is the #1 mobile phone manufacturer here.

freeswitch hosting

I wonder if it's possible to automatically flag accounts as spammers if they write a diary entry with links without having any OSM edits.

Winter pub meet-up in Oxford Circus

I can only think of Lesotho and Kosovo (although the latter is not universally recognized as a country). Ah, I only thought of Mexico just now. :-)

Bridges

@lyx, no, layer=-1 does not mean underground. It simply means that a feature is below those nearby with layer=0 to layer=5. The fact that the default is layer=0 and is used for the vast majority of features that lie flat on the ground is just a happy accident.

OSM and Censorship

FWIW, I agree that the vitriol in the said diary entry is too much. The website owner may have been rude in his second e-mail, but Paul's response by ranting here in OSM is not appropriate.

Caramoan

I'm glad to hear that our blog posts inspired you to contribute to the project. OSM really needs all the contributors it can get!

Have you seen maning's Philippine maps for Garmin devices made from OSM (http://esambale.wikispaces.com/osmphil_garmin)? He has an experimental edition for Magellan units (http://esambale.wikispaces.com/osmphil_garmin#toc6) and you might want to try that and help him improve it. :-)
