First diary entry.

Hello OSM.

Shamed to think that after almost 4 years of contributing (under various usernames) that I’ve never properly indulged in writing my experiences in an OSM diary. Today this changes. Hilariously, the first post feels like the hardest to write (in fact, it’s been on my ‘to do’ list for about 3 months).

There are many things that I want to write about: reflections on recent events, inspiring statements and stimulating conversations around hOSM community, joining LCCWG, my admiration for the speed and vitality of the development of the “Call to Take Action and Confront Systemic Offensive Behaviour in the OSM Community”, and even my frustration in differentiating between flat number and house number tags (more of that exciting topic to come in future posts!).

But for now, I’ll start with introducing myself:

Hello, I’m Sophie. Contributor to Maps.me since 2016. Missing Maps volunteer since 2017, MM facilitator since 2018 (corporate mapathons), HOT employee since April 2020. Lives in Cambridge, UK.

Hello Sophie.

That’s some great contribution and involvement over there. Gj

Flat number vs house number? Looking forward to read the post, mainly because I don’t really see how can someone confuse them. In my opinion, house number means the building, and flat number the part of the building.

Interestingly not in the UK @jimkats

I live in a block of flats, and my flat number is 134 which is also my house number. I do not live in house XX, in flat XX, Street XX…I live in “134 Street XX”. This is confusing when tagging.

In your case Sophie, I would say your building wouldn’t have an addr:housenumber tag if the building itself doesn’t have a number (or a name?), and would simply be tagged as:

addr:flats 1-150 (if your block is from flat 1 to flat 150, for example) building:flats: 150 (if the block had 150 flats)

… or, if flat 13 doesn’t exist:

addr:flats 1-12;14-151 building:flats: 150

.. or, if your block only had some of the property numbers within the street…

addr:flats 130-140 building:flats: 10

I’m confused? What is the problem with tagging the entrance with “addr:housenumber=134;150” (as you currently do)?

Then any geocoding software will simply display this:

134-150, XX street, XX city, UK
