Yes - you can align the imagery with existing buildings and roads. In iD open the imagery panel where you can select different images, scroll to the bottom to the section Adjust Imagery Offset.

The adjustment is done on your local PC .. not on the remote image.

You will find that the adjustment may have to be remade frequently as the image may have ‘lumps’ in it (small hill slopes can throw the image off one way on one side and the reverse on the other).

There’s an imagery offset database: http://offsets.textual.ru/map , which you can use to record the offsets you make to the imagery.

This is helpful when working with other mappers in the area, and you need to agree on common offsets, to make it easier for everyone to collaborate.

We’ve also found Strava’s street-level global heatmaps to be useful for aligning aerial imagery, and they are a more consistent reference against any aerial imagery that may change from time to time.
