Finding errors on Google Maps

Posted by pussreboots on 14 December 2025 in English.

I have to mapping projects I’m doing here. The first one, the one that has most of my focus is my home community of Fairview, California. The other is Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. For both projects I rely on a variety of tools:

  • the Bing visual
  • Google maps
  • County GIS records

While Google has good data most of the time, I have spotted a couple dozen errors since I’ve started on these projects. When I can easily submit a correction to them, I do. When I can’t, I make sure my work better reflects what the county map tells me.

Please be aware we may not use gmaps data as source as they have a strict license. Data including street views on google maps are not “open”.

I know that. I’m not taking actual data. But having two maps to look at is good for spotting differences. The actual data though is coming from GIS sites. For Fairview it’s here: https://webmap.hayward-ca.gov/

For Canonsburg it’s the Washington County, PA Parcel & GIS Viewer.
