Cross Country Ski trails

Hey Mark.

Looking good mate. Pity Mapnik doesn't show it, casual browsers won't realise it's there... I did a bit of the downhill areas, lifts and roads at Falls Creek last month. I've asked for the contours to be loaded on openpistemap and they are slowly coming online (it only updates about once a month) Still waiting for the update of the ways, hopefully won't be long now...

mapsource doesnt open gpx

Hi.

Perhaps it would be better for you to explain what you are trying to do, and how you will use the result?

Most of us here are busy tracing our captured GPS Tracks in .gpx format into OSM Ways so that they appear on the OSM map. Sounds like you want to reverse that process for some reason?

Garmen GPSMAP 60CSx

I posted the other day that the patch antennae models (Vista HCX in my case) work better in marginal situations like wooded valleys when the unit faces the sky. I've modified my daypack harness to hold it in that orientation, and I've noticed a lot better accuracy since.

The 60CSx has a better antenna, try keeping it high on your person, and always with a good view...

Two weeks cycling and hiking with a Garmin Vista HCx

The waypoint entry, and the inability to save them to the memorycard are the most annoying 'features' of the Vista HCx IMO.

Have you noticed that in marginal areas (deep forested valleys), there is a significant difference in the accuracy between holding the Vista vertically or horizontally. I used to carry it in a front-facing pocket or on a short lead - it was always vertical except when I held it to view the screen. It must be the location and sensitivity of the patch antenna I guess.

I've installed a patch of velcro on the top of my daypack shoulder harness, and the Vista lives up there now, enjoying the best view of the sky :)

Anarchy and OSM

Like most voluntary projects I have been involved with, the volunteers are relatively happy while there is plenty of work to do, and not much impeding them from contributing. As soon as the link between almost immediate results of the users input (osmarender + weekly mapnik) is lost in some approval or voting process that ties edits up, OSM will lose a substantial amount of contributors. Maybe that would be appropriate when most of the work is done...

On the other hand, it would be neat if there were more direction. For instance, I have come across some walking trails that have multiple names, but there is no clear way of tagging them that I can find that will put those names into mapnik.

Question to Online map sites

Sure you can. Just record the name of the street as you track it with your GPS. Pencil and paper, photo or audio will all work.

Yurrebilla

Aha. Found that I can use my non-timedated gps track with JOSM. With a bit of a learning curve, I have been able to upload Yurrebilla01a.osm and it now appears in the online editor. I will have to capture the join between the two trails, but we're well on the way now.
