In other words, I cleared a track from my GPS without checking that I had copied it successfully to the PC. What I thought was a track file turns out to have waypoints in it...

Bummer! :( If it was on a memory card, you may be able to recover it with an undelete utility, so long as you don't use the memory card too much afterwards. It should take a while to overwrite the file as memory cards use "wear levelling".

Nope, built-in memory on my GPSmap76C. Ah well - lesson learned (hopefully!).
