The correct tags to use would be ...
natural=water + water=reservoir , intermittent=yes|no if known.
There is no need to tag with area=yes or to add a name.

natural=water plus water=reservoir are the tags you are needing.
Though commonly called dams throughout rural Australia, the above tags are the correct ones for the OSM for those waterbodies. A dam is the wall holding back the water body and is used to outline dam walls with the tag man_made=dam
