I had the privilege of presenting about weeklyOSM at COSCUP 2025, Taiwan’s largest open source conference, held on August 9–10, 2025, at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) in Taipei. This year also marked COSCUP’s 20th anniversary, making it an especially meaningful event to join in celebrating open source.

About My Presentation

My talk, titled “Behind the Scenes of weeklyOSM: How We Share OSM News Every Week,” focused on the inner workings of our community-driven newsletter.

For those unfamiliar, weeklyOSM is an independent, multilingual publication that has summarized developments in the OpenStreetMap (OSM) world every week for more than a decade—now surpassing 780 editions.

Key Topics

During the session, I highlighted:

• weeklyOSM’s Mission – Connecting mappers worldwide by bringing local stories to a global audience. We aim to be the heartbeat of the OSM community, delivering the pulse of mapping activities around the globe.
• Independence – weeklyOSM operates as an independent media platform, unaffiliated with any organization (including OSMF), and delivers news in over 15 languages to ensure accessibility for everyone.
• Our Toolchain – A closer look at OSMBC (OpenStreetMap Blog Collector), the open-source platform we use for collecting, authoring, translating, reviewing, and publishing news.
• How We Collect News – From OSM diaries, community channels, and social media, to direct submissions, ensuring comprehensive and balanced coverage.
• Taiwan’s Role – Taiwan’s active mapping scene and unique events, such as night market mapping parties, which exemplify how local stories can inspire and educate a global audience.

Why COSCUP Was the Right Place

COSCUP (Conference for Open Source Coders, Users & Promoters) proved to be the perfect venue for sharing weeklyOSM’s story. With over 3,000 open source enthusiasts, developers, and community builders from across Asia, the conference’s young energy and values aligned perfectly with our mission of strengthening global OSM communication.

Community Response

The talk sparked engaging discussions, including:

• weeklyOSM as community journalism—not just reporting news, but shining a light on contributors and communities.
• How local mapping activities (like Taiwan’s night market mapping parties) can inspire mappers in neighboring countries.
• Strong interest from Taiwanese OSM members in contributing local stories to weeklyOSM.
• Technical curiosity about OSMBC and how our distributed editorial team collaborates worldwide.
• Taiwan’s strategic position as a bridge connecting Asian OSM communities.

I emphasized how Taiwan’s vibrant mapping culture demonstrates the kind of local stories that gain global impact through weeklyOSM.

Reflections and Next Steps

Speaking at COSCUP reinforced how essential projects like weeklyOSM are for sustaining open source ecosystems. Just as COSCUP provides a physical meeting space for sharing knowledge, weeklyOSM offers a digital meeting space for the global OSM community to stay connected.

This experience also highlighted new opportunities to better serve the Asian OSM community. I look forward to collaborating with contacts made in Taipei to feature more regional activities and to expand into additional Asian languages.

During the session, I was asked a critical question:
“What is the ultimate goal of weeklyOSM?”

It is not a question with a simple answer. weeklyOSM has grown into a vital platform for sharing, connecting, and amplifying voices across the OSM world—but its future direction should be defined together with the community it serves.

私は 2025年8月9日～10日、台北の 国立台湾科技大学（NTUST） で開催された台湾最大のオープンソースカンファレンス COSCUP 2025 にて、週刊OSM（weeklyOSM） について発表する機会をいただきました。今年は COSCUPの20周年 という節目でもあり、オープンソースの祭典に参加できたことは特別に意義深いものでした。

私のセッションのタイトルは 「週刊OSMの舞台裏：毎週ニュースを届ける仕組み」 で、コミュニティ主導のニュースレターである週刊OSMの仕組みを紹介しました。

ご存じない方のために説明すると、週刊OSM は独立した多言語ニュースレターであり、15年以上にわたり毎週休まずOSMの出来事を要約・発信しており、すでに 780号以上 を数えています。

主なトピック

発表では以下の内容を取り上げました：

• 週刊OSMの使命 – 世界中のマッパーをつなぎ、ローカルな出来事をグローバルな読者へ届けること。コミュニティの「鼓動」として活動の脈動を伝える存在であること。
• 独立性 – OSMFを含むいかなる組織にも属さない、独立したジャーナリズム媒体 として活動し、15以上の言語でニュースを発信。
• 技術基盤 – ニュース収集・執筆・翻訳・校正・公開を行うオープンソースの仕組み OSMBC の紹介。
• 記事収集の流れ – OSM日記、コミュニティチャンネル、SNSの監視、直接の投稿受付などを通じて網羅的にニュースを集めていること。

COSCUPが最適な場であった理由

COSCUP（Conference for Open Source Coders, Users & Promoters） は、週刊OSMの活動を共有するのに理想的な場でした。アジア各地から 3,000人以上 のオープンソース愛好者、開発者、コミュニティ推進者が集まるこのカンファレンスは、その若さ、熱気と理念において、私たちの使命と完全に共鳴しました。

発表後、多くの活発な議論が生まれました：

• 週刊OSMは単なるニュース配信ではなく、コミュニティジャーナリズム として人々や活動に光を当てていること。

ふりかえりと今後の展望

COSCUPでの発表は、週刊OSMのようなコミュニケーション活動がオープンソースの健全性に不可欠であることを改めて実感させるものでした。COSCUPが物理的な場を提供して知識を共有しているように、週刊OSMはグローバルなOSMコミュニティの「デジタルな集いの場」を担っています。

また、アジア地域への貢献をさらに拡大できる可能性も見えてきました。台北で得た新たなつながりを活かし、地域活動をより多く紹介し、将来的にはさらに多くのアジア言語版を追加したいと考えています。

そして、セッションの中で非常に重要な質問をいただきました：
「週刊OSMの究極の目標は何ですか？」

これは簡単に答えられるものではありません。週刊OSMはOSM世界の出来事を伝え、つなぎ、声を増幅する重要なプラットフォームへと成長しましたが、その未来の方向性は、読者やコミュニティとともに考えていくべきだと思います。
