My experience in Anticipatory action mapping in Ngororero District , Western Province in RWANDA

The fieldwork of Anticipatory action mapping was conducted on Wednesday, July 24th, 2024 in the Western province of Rwanda, Ngororero district by the ecoMappers of OpenStreetMap Rwanda with the collaborative partnership of the administration of Ngororero district, and the volunteers who reside in this district. The fieldwork mainly aimed to acquire information from the leaders and community about the hotspots that had rainfall-induced landslides, and flooding, onboarding new volunteer members, and verifying the digitization status.
Description of activities
This fieldwork was a great opportunity that resulted in the onboarding of new volunteer members by matching the experienced mapper with the new one so that they could exchange skills and be aware of different tools that they can use while mapping, they learned the other different map features and how to use tags identifying those features.
Spatial analysis Field work objectives
From the ability to show the hotspot in google Earth to extracting the elevation , slope analysis and downloading the OSM data digitized around a particular hotspot.
During the field visit, the digitization status was verified using the mobile application Vespucci. On the field, the volunteers were briefed on how to download, install, and use the application. This enabled them to confirm the status of the digitization within the buffer of the hotspot.
The application was installed by different volunteers and deployed to various hotspots. Later, when the teams reconvened, their reports showed that 97% of the features around the hotspot were accurately digitized and matched the project set imagery (ESRI World Imagery). This gives us confidence that the features around the hotspots are as they appear on the satellite imagery and that the data contributed by the volunteers is of high quality. This assurance will allow us to proceed with the attribute data

The first hotspot, I have visited is located in Ngororero district, Ngororero sector, Mugano cell, in Ruhuha village and Mpara Village . There was a landslide that started in early 2000 but it was only showing signs of landslide for long period of time and the government tried to help people to plant trees that can help in preventing that landslide but unluckily in the april, 2019 those did not helped in achieving its goal because the landslide hazard started. And in 2020 there was a huge landslide where the Roads are destroyed and are not being used in the rainfall season.
The second hostspot, i visited is also in Ngororero sector, Rukarara cell, in Rususa village. In 2020 there was a landslide and flooding where it destroyed Satinsyi Bridge and it is no longer being used by citizens, and to construct it, it is still a big challenge because the surrounding land are affected by flooding and there is a landslide when it is a rainfall season until now.
