Changeset When Comment

Hiya, thanks for the attention to detail you’re giving to Leighton Moss.

A few questions on this changeset:

Why delete the residential area around way/500763160?

And why change the causeway from bicycle=designated to bicycle=destination? If no through cycling is allowed, that should already be inferred by the router from the fact the path at the eastern end is access=private for bicycles. bicycle=designated is the correct tagging for its legal status as a public bridleway, aiui.

Thanks

I’ve reverted the fence changes as changeset/164456662 as it looks like a mass automated edit to apply suggested changes to deprecated tagging without surveying, both due to the fact that fence_type=chain_link is rare here, and a few spot checks I did on these fences using Bing Streetside.

See barrier=wire_fence and osm.wiki/Automated_Edits_code_of_conduct

If I’ve made a mistake, please reply and let me know

Super, thanks! :D

The rest of the shops on the row are just tagged with addr:street=Yewbarrow Terrace, so my first inclination would be to make it consistent with those.

I guess if I was mapping this from scratch, I’d probably tag them all as addr:street=Yewbarrow Terrace addr:parentstreet=Main Street though, given that they are probably primarily addressed as ‘Yewbarrow Terrace’ rather than ‘Main Street’ (hence parentstreet rather than substreet).

Thanks for the updates! The addr:housename=Yewbarrow Terrace on node/6486281139 looks a little odd, given that’s the street name. Was that deliberate?

I agree with lakedistrict, and have changed it to access=customers fee=no in changeset/164413291

It’s unfortunate that choosing the right answer in StreetComplete for this quest involves knowing what the options it provides translate to in tagging terms.

Yes, if you’re unsure I think it’s always best to add a comment instead, then come back to it in ID later, with the OSM wiki open, and resolve the comment.

Thanks for your surveying! :D

Heya, thanks for your edits around Ambleside recently :)

I’ve fixed the house type tagging here in changeset/164386790building=terrace is for the outline of an entire row of terraces, not individual houses within a terrace. building=house house=terraced is for that. See building=terrace

Hiya, thanks for your edits around Cockerham, it’s good to see people adding more detail.

However, please don’t delete existing data when adding detail. It runs the risk of losing tagging data (such as on the parish hall, or the school building), and it deletes the history of other people’s contributions to the map. See osm.wiki/Keep_the_history

Also, when adding large amounts of geometry, please make sure the aerial imagery is aligned to OSMUK Cadastral Parcels before editing, otherwise everything you add will not be aligned to the real world. Aerial imagery changes alignment by a few metres every time it’s updated.

Any questions about either of these things, just ask; I’m happy to help :)

I’ve changed it from bicycle_parking=rack to bicycle_parking=stands in changeset/164361852, based on Bing Streetside. Please let me know (or change it back) if I’ve assumed incorrectly, thanks!

Nice work, thanks! :D

Did you mean to make changes to the battery container in Lidl? I don’t know if it’s still there, but the node (node/6544418463) is now just tagged as a rubbish dumpster, which seems a bit odd? :)

Thanks also for your edits around Bothel today :)

Does this bus shelter have its name printed on a sign (like a shop)? If not, the `name` tag should probably be a `description` — see osm.wiki/Names#Names_are_not_for_descriptions

Heya, thanks for your recent cycling improvements in Whitehaven :)

There’s no need to tag things as tunnels if they go under a bridge — the convention is that one thing is tagged as a bridge, or the other is tagged as a tunnel, but not both.

See bridge=*

I’ve fixed this instance in changeset/164142068

Heya, are you sure all these fences (e.g. way/262270142) are chain_link ones? I’m guessing you made some suggested tagging upgrades from barrier=wire_fence, but aiui typically fence_type=wire is vastly more prevalent around Furness than fence_type=chain_link. Could it be that instead?

Hi again :) Thanks for all the bike parking additions recently!

Just a note that it’s not common practice to add a stub path leading to the cycle parking node if it’s just off the side of a path. Bike routing engines don’t need it.

If you wanted to describe the area here more precisely, I’d probably map a traffic island (area:highway=traffic_island) at the end of these rows of parking spaces, with the bike parking node inside the traffic island, and the zebra crossing transitioning to a footpath as it enters the island.

That level of detail certainly isn’t necessary for routers to suggest the bike parking to people, though. Happy to chat about it further if you’re interested!

One other quick question: what kind of bike parking is this? I see you’ve used bicycle_parking=rack in a few places, but that kind of parking is relatively uncommon in the UK. Typically UK bike parking is bicycle_parking=stands (see bicycle_parking=*). I just wanted to double check!

Just checking — is this shop Penrith Carpet Centre (https://www.penrithcarpetcentre.co.uk/)? The name= tag should be that, if so, unless they are actually physically signed as ‘Carpet Shop’ outside :)

> it would have taken an unreasonable amount of extra effort to needlessly split this changeset.

With JOSM, that would only mean selecting subsets of the 14 items and using ‘upload selection’, it’s not much effort.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense, but it’s not what I asked :) I was asking if these roads could now be marked as complete and open to traffic? Presumably you surveyed the area to know about the signage at the entrance

No worries, there can be a bit of a steep learning curve to editing the map, so it’s appreciated that you’re putting the time in to improve it!

Is the main reception building the same one which has the campsite shop in (way/463401487)? Or the one next door which has the farm shop in (way/463401486)? Or a different one entirely? It’s been a few years since I was in Nether Wasdale so I can’t remember.

I agree it would make sense to have the bike hire node where they meet people for hire, rather than where the bikes are stored.

If you could make a note on Monday that would be grand :)
