On Overture's Avoidance of the ODbL

Well said, Jacob. Thank you for writing this.

Hosting a continuously-updating vector tile server using AWS and an old laptop for $1.61/month

Thanks for setting this up, and writing about it! The cost of the electricity to run the build server isn’t included in the cost breakdown, but given that it’s an efficient laptop I imagine that might only be a few dollars a month. Being under constant load might drive up the cost somewhat, but it’s still probably pretty minimal. I also wonder about the SSD lifespan. Under normal use most of us never hit the write limit of our SSDs as it’s usually measured in hundreds of terabytes written (TBW). If a 70gb file is written for each build and the SSD is rated for 300 TBW then it should hold up for around 4280 builds. At 2.6 builds per day (every 9 hours) that works out to 1607 days or 4.4 years. Not bad! Of course the numbers I’ve assumed there may wildly incorrect. It will be interesting to see how it holds up.
