Thanks Jedrzej , Yes we can, we can also see other interesting things, such at buildings, old and new, farm machinery, different crops and wildlife. .We can talk to other walkers get fresh air, vitamin D and exercise. Win win win win!

Thanks Bernard, I remember seeing an asphalt path and kerb that had been lifted locally by water burst, damage was quite surprising . Gas explosion/fire I don’t want to see.

Using all available GPX traces, in an editor, will allow us to check and adjust imagery. Several traces will give a fairly accurate result. Even if an area is on OSM it may be useful to upload GPX data because the area has been mapped by a mapper who has been fooled by misaligned imagery, you see it and you believe your own eyes :-) so upload those traces. If your device seemingly off sets your position a similar amount on the map several times, that bit of map may have been created from off line imagery. Happy mapping

I have seen a few very poor quality traces, it is good idea to inspect them before uploading to OSM. GPS Prune is a good open source ( no ads and free) tiny, java based PC app that will display a GPX over OSM . You can then decide if it will add anything useful to OSM. It also makes it easy to trim, or prune, any rouge points or private info in the trace. The time of each point can be geolocated and matched to a sound recording or a Jpeg, just set the time on the camera first ideally, although it is possible to adjust and correct afterwards. see https://activityworkshop.net/software/gpsprune/

I like the map style and i think maps with a white backgound are the best, It is similar style to GB Ordinance Survey maps and the USSR military maps. I think the military realised the importance of clear maps that can be read in poor light conditions White backgrounds are easier to read and also use less ink to print. I regret that most of the OSM map renderings have too much filled in with colour which reduces clarity, perhaps when my eyes young it was less of a problem. BUT unless the licence suits OSM terms We cannot use it.

My Aunt and Cousins lived in Northumberland road on the edge of the park when i was ten years old … 1957 .. Heaven! I have added edited a bit in the area after walking it the area either alone or with Kettering Ramblers ( HI all ). Northamptonshire and the Nene have some great footpaths. I was concerned for Wickstead Park when i ran short of income due to covid. Visit it it’s great.

You are correct it is mainly for mappers, that is editors of the map. It works for me. Sharing a link with a marker works for me, using a Win 10 or Linux desktops PCs I would not want to edit on a phone or tablet much other than just nodes.

I like the etrex 30 it lasts well on batteries, i use LIDL Tronic ones. I trimmed down a phone screen protector. I also use the ankle section of an old sock sewn into a pouch with a draw cord to either hang from my neck or protect it in a bag or pocket. It also works well wit free map scans using garmin custom maps and osm downloads.

To be safe and to avoid electrocution use non conductive poles, carbon fiber is conductive, a number of uses of carbon fiber fishing poles have died when getting too close to overhead high voltage cables.

Hi John I have been adding footpaths in the Huntingdon Cambs area, since I started mapping almost ten years ago. Some of the paths were recorded on garmin gpses some on and android phones. I enjoy being out often and exploring something new is very good. I do shorter walks and surveys alone but longer ones have been with a few pals or have been on group walks of the many ramblers groups that are based within up to forty or so miles of home. This web site may yield some rights of way https://www.rowmaps.com/kmls/ the other source is to look at the county councils interactive maps of rights of way which from time to time show footpath creations or changes. I like Ordnance Survey maps and usually carry one. If I see a farmer who look about to say “ ask are you lost “ I’ll try and beat him to it and ask “where have i gone wrong? “ they have always been fine in my experience. Th only problem with Ord Survey is that changes to rights of way take some time to be added or moved, often years! to be updated, I have in the past emailed Ord Surv and informed them of changes that Councils have made with landowners to paths. I tell then have look at openstreetmap that’s where they are now. Happy mapping Andy

I spend a lot of time rambling, that’s walking in the countryside, recording footpaths and mapping them. I haven’t seen a working red phone box for quite a while. The older ones are so heavy, i believe they have cast iron frames and it isn’t economic to remove them. Often ownership is transferred or sold for a small amount to the village. They then become put and take book exchanges or are used to house a defibrillator and remain a familiar landmark in the village. I have mapped five or six of them. Happy Mapping

i have seen similar edits, Contact them, First be kind to them and complement some of their work before you explain how you mapped the area and that you surveyed the area with GPS and made GPXes and compared them to the aerial, and explain that it isn’t always aligned correctly, send the a link to the wiki about relevant stuff. With luck you may get a good response. Happy Mapping

I agree small edits are great. Often the notes that are posted with an edit only apply to a part of it. One part can be mapped using Bing one part local knowledge or GPS or even estimation so small edits can have better information. Big edits can sometimes get lost or fail part way through if you lose power or connection which can be annoying. So carry on with small edits. Happy Mapping Andy
