I’ve just started OSM editing, so I figure I’ll make a diary entry. I don’t expect to contribute a great deal of data, just things that I find relevant to my own usage of OSM (like most OSM contributors, I’m sure). At the moment, I’m numbering the buildings on my street and correcting building shapes so that Google Maps might hopefully pick up the improvements and so my own pet tracking app is a lot easier to comprehend.

Google Maps does not use or read in OpenStreetMap data. Your contributions here help all the other data consumers of OSM data.
Happy mapping though!

Welcome to OpenStreetMap!
Like the previous contributor commented, using Google map data and imagery is not permitted due to legal reasons. However, here is a list of imagery sources you can use.
I’m pretty sure Google doesn’t use OpenStreetMap data but here is a list of companies and services that might pick up your edits.
If you need help, there is a community Discord server with very helpful and knowledgeable individuals (from all over the world) ready to help and guide you. The OSM Wiki has very good documentation and guidelines on how to map.
All in all, have fun on your mapping journey and don’t hesitate to ask for help.
