Changeset When Comment

Hi!

Welcome back to OSM :)

I've added more details to this park and playground in the following changeset: https://osmcha.org/changesets/97203542

If you're able to, could you please review it for anything missing or potential errors?

Thanks!

-Wood

"Gps devices use OSM"

Yes, however, they generally use their own custom renderer, and any GPS tools query function worth its salt would be able to check features inside another area.

Put it this way - knowing where drinking fountains, wastebaskets and toilets are in a school is also useful, but you're not going to name each one of those "Holabird Elementary Drinking Fountain", "Holabird Elementary Wastebasket" or "Holabird Elementary Toilets"

It seems like you're slightly misunderstanding what OSM actually is.

If someone wanted to produce a map of athletic fields and playgrounds that displays operator and access information in text alongside the name, they could simply make a renderer that takes that information and does just that.

It's just like how you can click the layers tab on the main OSM website and swap between Standard, Cycle, Transport, and so forth, different data is given different priorities in different renderings/applications.

OSM by itself isn't like Google Maps with baked-in navigation and all that. It is more like a database designed to be contributed to and then used by other services rather than a tool designed with "civilian" end-users in mind.

Hiya Gabriel,

This is a really common error on OSM, but the name tag should *only* be used for the actual names of things, rather than descriptions.

For example, if you had a University called "The Albert Einstein Technical Institute." You would add that name to the amenity=university area.

If there was a sports field at that university, you wouldn't just add the name "The Albert Einstein Technical Institute Sports Field" simply because it is located on that campus, as that would generally be a description. It's a sports field at the university, which should be apparent as the sports field should be mapped inside of the university to start with.

If the sports field was called something else or was specifically signposted, you could add that name. So if there was a sports field at The Albert Einstein Technical Institute called the "Lise Meitner Baseball Park" you could add that name.

The key factor here, as Elliot put it very well, is the access tagging. The access key should help local map users work out what they can and can't actually access without the need for descriptive names.

If you're adding names to try and achieve a description of access or operator in some way, you're essentially just mapping for the renderer which is considered poor practice on OSM.

Hi RI guy!
Welcome to OSM and thanks for being open to feedback!

Others might chime in as well, but a couple of hints I can give are:

1) The name tag should be for actual names only, descriptions can go under the description= key, or better still, be achieved with detailed tagging.

2) Playgrounds are usually tagged as leisure=playground rather than leisure=park

3) You can use the tag fixme to note things that need to be fixed, or alternatively, you can place a note on the map.

If you haven't checked it out yet, the OSM wiki is a great resource for learning how to tag things: osm.wiki/Main_Page

Hi 케이1159,
These edits have raised a lot of warnings and don't really seem to make sense. What were you trying to add here?

96611815 almost 5 years ago

Hi the1booger!
Welcome back to OSM.
Are you sure that the best tag for these areas (way/889593624) is leisure=park?
They look more like small grassed areas dedicated to estate signs.
A park is normally for recreational/leisure purposes.

Hi Mick,

Thanks again for your recent additions to the map.

I have to admit that this last change has left me a little confused. I cannot find any listing for a Satanic church, temple or other congregation at this location. What is your source? Are you able to provide more information?

Additionally, I can't find any information that would indicate that this property is anything other than a private residence with no noteable historic or cultural significance. Are you able to provide evidence to the contrary?

Are you good to remove the duplicates?
I noticed you just added a a recreation ground to your house as well? What were you trying to add there?
On OSM, a recreation ground is "an open green space for general recreation, which often includes formal or informal pitches, nets and so on."
(landuse=recreation_ground)

Hi Yuri,

Welcome to OSM!

This school is already on the map, here: way/29688528#map=16/41.9902/-70.9932

Were you trying to add something in addition to the existing school?

Please note that I have not personally reviewed or "approved" of these changes. I have merely told Gabriel0322 via private message that they should make honest and accurate changes to the map.

Hi SkinnyCitrus!

Welcome to OSM and thank you for your first contributions to them map!

Here's some feedback and hints to help you along your way:

- There's already a residential area marked on the map in the location you were editing, here: relation/7450398

If you were looking to add buildings, you can use building=house (or if you want to be more precise, tags like building=detatched)

building=house

building=detached

- OSM defines parks in a certain way, and that definition doesn't include private residential backyards associated with houses.

leisure=park

-Pools and natural water ponds are very different things. If you're adding pools associated with private homes, make sure you mark them as private!

leisure=swimming_pool

water=pond

I've made some refinements to your recent changes. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Hi Dtang,

I'm not sure if you saw my comment on your previous changeset where you added two similar but different shaped parks over these houses, you can find it here:

changeset/95783836

Please note that houses and private residential yards are not considered parks on Open Street Map and will be removed.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Thank you for not removing or incorrectly editing the school areas.

95783836 about 5 years ago

Hi Dtang5 and welcome back to OSM after your long absence!

We define parks in a particular way here on OSM, and that definition doesn't include private residential yards of houses.

You can read more on the OSM wiki, here:
leisure=park

If you were trying to add a real-world park and had some problems working out how to do it, please feel free to reach out.

Hi Gabriel,

As always your enthusiasm is appreciated, however, I believe these kinds of changes have been discussed with you before and reverted multiple times.

Discussions have occurred on the following changesets among others:
changeset/70158664
changeset/70158004
changeset/69997325

The entire grounds in these situations have been confirmed to be the property/grounds of the schools in question, including via emails to the Baltimore County parks department which has confirmed that schools grounds are indeed operated by the schools in question (such as in changeset/70094413)

I really appreciate your enthusiasm when it comes to helping your local Pokemon GO community, but I can assure you that this is not the best way to go about things, and that your incorrect or false changes will be reverted.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you need help making legitimate changes to the map.

Best,

Wood.

Hi Mick-Mappy and welcome to OSM!
This seems like quite a large park and seems to include a lot of infrastructure such as rail lines, industrial facilities and the like.

Are you sure leisure=park is the best way to describe it?

leisure=park

Hi ThramFlacox79 and welcome to OSM.
Question - Are you sure that the smaller park you created here (way/881205047/) is publicly accessible? It looks very much like a private backyard associated with 3793 Smallwood Court as opposed to a park.

94818082 about 5 years ago

Hi khailamoberg97,
Welcome to OSM!
In this changeset, you made the entirety of the Rice University Running Trail into a tunnel.
That doesn't seem correct... were you maybe trying to add the tunnel to a certain section only?

94848138 about 5 years ago

Hiya Boom050982,

Welcome to OSM!

When you added the larger park area here, you also changed the Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery from a cemetery into a park. Was this an intended change or a mis-click?
