Fair enough, thanks for the correction.

I see I've conflated the foot=use_sidepath and sidewalk=separate tag here.

Yup, access for "all" set to "no" will mark all access as not allowed. Usually if you are not sure about a tag you can look at the wiki pages, there are good explanations of how to tag different things.
Thanks for the fix!

I have noticed the sliproad is tagged with "access=no" (way/163610576), which marks the road as not accessible by public (access=no).
Looking at the history of the road it looks like you might have added the tag by mistake then :) way/163610576/history

Is this road actually closed?

Thanks for the detailed response and suggested approaches, I appreciate that introducing another mapping style into a city that does not use separate mapping of sidewalks is a bit more confusing than perhaps desirable - and particularly when UK does not really have a concept of jaywalking. As for the geometries of junctions, I have found out about the ability to specify crossing using the tag alone (i.e. crossing=no and separate nodes for where the crossing should instead take place), and the way you have suggested - i.e. piece of path between crossing points where needed - is a very good way to map the geometry; I have actualy recently used this approach when mapping a roundabout in another city.

A small note, with the railing at the junction with QM drive and Kelvinside Av, that was supposed to be a kerb :) I have managed to mis-tag the barrier (I map kerbs to help with aerial/historical map alignment), so good spot there!

Another thing that I personally really like is the ability of the separate ways to better capture the geometry of sidewalks both within ond outwith junctions. Quite nice examples are the Kelvin Drive / Botanic Crescent section and the Kelvinside Avenue block.

Also, an interesting case to consider: junction of Queen Margaret's drive, Kelbourne Street, and Oban Drive. You can see I have mapped the railings placed alongside the western sides of the junction which were, quite certainly, placed there to prevent people from crossing Queen Margaret Drive. Not sure this situation can be represented without aid of separate sidewalks.

Heya Ossian, I can see that the conversation of separate vs. tagged ways has heated up a bit on the wiki too, with the two ways of mapping having their pros/cons shown (osm.wiki/Talk:Sidewalks). Anyways, the reason for why I have mapped the sidewalks is to avoid cluttering the main roads with connections to the townhouses that are quite numerous in West End (for example see Athole Gardens). A lot of these entrances have staircases leading up to them, which is a detail that is not well capturable without a separate way and connecting them straight to the road misrepresents the position of these staircases - and I think it's fairly important to capture these from accessibility point of view. Another reason is to capture the interesting crossing situations around busier Glaswegian roads, e.g. Byres/GWR. There are a few button-operated crossings with other streets not really lending themselves to be good points to cross. As an interesting example see the junction between GWR and Belmont Street and GWR leading up to the Kelvin Bridge. Crossing from Otago Street to north is virtually impossible due to how the traffic looks like - and there is an explicitly marked button-operated crossing next to Kelvin Bridge aside from the junction crossing between Bank Street and GWR. All in all I just could not find a better way to capture these, particularly when thinking about accessibility - how would a sight-impaired person navigate around the aforementioned GWR area if the sidewalks/crossings were not marked in this detail? Obviously it would be completely redundant for blocks of buildings with no distinct entrance paths and non-complex junctions, but I think in these cases the "separate sidewalks" mapping has a slight edge, although I recognise it does have its drawbacks in terms of potential clutter. I'd be happy to chat about this in more detail (even better, with more Glasgow mappers that you might know of) ... it would be nice to figure out local mapping guidelines, since every city and country has a slightly different style to its maps and Glasgow does not seem to have detailed guidances in this regard :)

Hi Bernard, thanks for taking the time to look at the paths :) The paths are connected together using the stairways on the two sides of the complex (next to no. 1 and no. 11, for example). There are 4 levels in total, and paths/entrances on each level are at the same positions. The paths/levels are ultimately joined up to the entrance to 365 Byres Road. To be honest I wasn't fully sure how to map this complex arrangment, so if you'd happen to know of a better/easier way to capture this building layout I'd be more than happy for corrections and changes :) FYI JOSM editor might be the best to look at the structure/leveling of the building, as it allows you to nicely filter out the different levels of the building.

Heya Marco, no worries :) The D4 motorway is continually delayed, so the information can be imprecise on some websites.
