addr:county tag within Somerset

Posted by UKChris on 24 October 2019 in English.

I’ve recently been going through Wellington and Taunton (in Somerset) to find addresses that didn’t have the tag addr:county=”Somerset”, aided by Overpass Turbo and adding the tag and value, so as to be consistent with other addresses in the area.

There is no need to add this tag on every entity inside the county, it only bloats the database.

The county administrative boundaries seem well-mapped, and a random search with Nominatim confirms that entities inside the boundary can correctly be geocoded as part of the Somerset county.

Note that the same goes for country, postcode, city etc. Most of those are already mapped as boundaries, so mappers only need to add “addresses” that cannot be determined automatically.

City and postcode in the UK aren’t generally mapped as boundaries.

I believe county is no longer part of the Royal Mail’s official address, so I wouldn’t consider adding an addr:county tag (though removing them where you find them is only going to bloat the database history too)
