over 7 years ago | Many thanks for info, DWG have added a 0-hour block on the original mapper. It looks as though they added fantasy power lines a while back. I will revert the recent edits.
over 7 years ago | Hi & welcome to OpenStreetMap, I'm a little concerned that the turnpike that you are adding does not exist. OpenStreetMap is a common database used by all. If you add things which dont exist, people may make poor choices when driving in the area, it may even be that emergency services use OSM data and things which dont exist can have obvious consequences. I appreciate as a newcomer that you may not be aware of these nuances, or even that your edits are shared with all not just a personal view of the world. We dont moderate user editing, I just came across your edits whilst watching a random selection of new edits, and they were not supported by available aerial imagery, which drew my attention to them. I'd appreciate a speedy reply. If this is a fictious/fantasy road it will need to be removed from OpenStreetMap as soon as possible. Many thanks, Jerry aka S53
over 7 years ago | Hi Ben, A big welcome to OpenStreetMap. Great to see someone mapping in your bit of Notts: the Ashfield district tends to be a little too far for regular visits from Nottingham. I drove past about 3 weeks ago, but didnt have time to stop & check the shops along Forest Road. I notice you've added the combo of housenumber and streetname in housename. This isn't needed (and may mean the address doesnt get displayed on the map because it's too long). The other thing is that you can make buildings look neater by choosing a building and either right mouse clicking and choosing the square icon, or just typing "S" (for square). Neither of these are big issues at all, but they may be helpful if you want to add more buildings. Best wishes, Jerry

over 7 years ago | Hi, Welcome to OSM, and thanks for adding your business. Dog training places are currently not particularly well mapped, but there appear to be two options for tagging this type of facility: amenity=animal_training with animal_training=dog OR sport=dog_training. I know we have one or two others mapped in the Nottingham area. I'll check what we used for those. Regards, Jerry, SK53
over 7 years ago | Yes, please always discuss this with the relevant local community. In my area we have enough mappers that we like to actually re-survey locations of closed stores.
over 7 years ago | Naturally not. Vespucci does this kind of odd thing when I'm not looking! For various reasons I haven't reviewed the added data either. Incidentally I surveyed this bit on Sat, but you got your edits in first. I noted that you put DEBRA in all upper case, whereas I'd gone for all lower (although with some doubts vs just capitalised). The Costa is actually a franchise too. J
over 7 years ago | Welcome to OpenStreetMap and thanks for adding the Scout & Community Hall. You might be interested to know that you can also add an additional tag to say that this is a community facility. There are two choices: amenity=community_centre, amenity=community_hall. The former gets shown on the main map like this: node/421936843. Also many village halls have defibrillators these days, and I see if any village should have one it's Hillsborough! These can be added using emergency=defibrillator. In both cases you should just be able to search for the term to add it in the editor. Hope this might be of some use, Jerry
over 7 years ago | Hi Will, You seem to have inadvertently incorporated an oil well into the fabric of the village hall. Jerry
over 7 years ago | Hi Kurusu112, yes you have two options: the most usual one is amenity=kindergarten (I sometimes I add kindergarten=day_nursery to separate ones which are primarily looking after kids from those doing some kind of teaching like a Montessori School). A alternative is amenity=childcare with childcare=day_nursery, but this is much less used and I'm not sure if it shows on the map. You can also add min_age and max_age to show the range ages of children tha are catered for. Regards, SK53

over 7 years ago | A2 through Carnlough up to where Largy Road rejoins to the N is marked as having a height limit of 3.8m. This seems a little unlikely as I cant see any bridges on the road at all. It also doesnt appear in the NIDirect list of low bridges (although a non-bridge height restriction may exist independently). Any recollection of why you added this? (And sorry for probing mapping from long ago, again). Jerry PS By way of explanation I was looking for somewhere with outside data to compare to OSM to provide a handle on completion of low bridge mapping & the NI Direct data was first I came across.
over 7 years ago | One bit of coastline is wrong way round, should be corrected soon.
over 7 years ago | I should also add that we have been successfully mapping addresses of POIs in Nottingham for many years now and have a dedicated application which uses address data. http://osm-nottingham.org.uk/. What you are adovating is a kind of data normalisation (which OSM does not do), which doesnt work anyway unless you treat addresses as first class objects (again something the OSM data model does not allow; and vanishingly rare in most business systems too). See links to Morten Lind from Denmark, referenced in Economist article. for the detailed argument.
over 7 years ago | This is completely and utterly wrong. We have well in excess of half a million addresses mapped in the UK on OSM mapped with the Karlsruhe Scheme. The latter is the de facto standard for mapping addresses and is used worldwide (some countries such as NL, DK, EE have complete national addresses mapped in this way). You can review my presentation to the UK OpenAddresses Symposium on the state of OSM addresses back in 2014 (https://www.slideshare.net/SK53/2sacrowd-osm-oaf), or read about me (and others around the world) mapping addresses in The Economist from Sep 2014: https://www.economist.com/international/2014/09/20/getting-on-the-map . Nothing has changed since then other than we quitely plug away adding more. Please dont make these changes, they break all the tools and data consumers using addresses, but notably the search engine Nominatim.
over 7 years ago | Hi Bea, Welcome to OpenStreetMap. It's always great to see folk adding stuff in Argyll. I just wanted to tell you a little more about how to get the objects to show up on the map itself. Places with names only will not get displayed. An additional tag (sometimes more) is needed to make this happen. For the village hall add either amenity=community_centre or amenity=social_facility. For the boat club it's a bit more complicated because the proper tags (club=sports) dont get processed by the software which creates the map. Probably the simplest thing is to draw a building instead of a point and add "Craignish Boat Club" as a name there. If this sounds too complicated for you starting out, I can make these changes & then you can have a look to see how I've done it. Best wishes, Jerry (aka SK53)
over 7 years ago | Sorry it was you mentioning Orston which caused me to say that. As for rights of way, if you ignore byways & restricted byways there are just two tags: designation=public_footpath and designation=public_bridleway. HTH
