OpenStreetMap
I like to hike around Thimphu and have a HTC HD I use as GPS. Most of the fun so far is checking the altitude but, recognising where I am would also be nice.
On my HTC (Mobile Windows) I use the GCC app and the documentation that came with the app recommends OSM as source of maps. Actually, I need tiles. So here starts the adventure of downloading tiles on my HTC… And seeing on my HTC what I could see when I look around.

You can take a look at the above, although I have to say that Windows isn’t such an attractive OS for OSM developers.
Btw, since we get maps by Bing (owned by MS), and Bing maps also has a OSM layer (although I have never seen it because I can’t run silverlight), so it is possible that the Bing maps app can use an OSM layer. But I don’t know this.

Keep in mind when you are lokoing at altitude from GPS that the error in altitude is usually 5 to 10 times greater than the error in ground position. I regularly see altitude errors of +/- 25 meters even when I have a good fix from many satellites.
