Also, please note that ref= tag is intended for MTA's bus stop number, which unique to each and every bus stop.
If you want to record which bus line it is, it must be tagged in route_ref= tag.

As documented on note=* this tag is intended to inform other mappers about non-obvious information about an element, the author's intent when creating it, or hints for further improvement.
Telling somebody sitting in front of their computer that this field has ticks is not that useful information.. :)
