The whole giant area is a ventilation shaft?๐Ÿคจ This doesn't seem correct...

All the info I have shows that it doesn't exist there.

Please provide some supporting evidence that it's there.

You can create description= tag explaining what it is for users to possibly see, or a note= tag for other mappers to see if you think some feature might be confusing for others to understand(and possibly alter it in incorrect way).

134152527 almost 3 years ago

You shouldn't invent names for features just so that their labels show up on the map. That's called osm.wiki/Tagging_for_the_renderer and that's incorrect to do. For us mappers, the most important thing is to make sure that the underlying data is accurate. Then it's up to the different map styles to make sure that relevant features are as readable as possible. But if you fudge the data to look good in one map style, it might look wrong, broken or even not show up at all in another map style.

Yes, it's perfectly normal for features not to have name= tag if they are unnamed...
I already redraw this parking lot as an area to more accurately represent its shape, rather than just an undetermined node. ๐Ÿ‘

This edit doesn't seem correct.
The small intersecting segments should still be tagged as sidewalks since that's what they are...

Hello.
These changes seem to be incorrect.
Crosswalks with traffic lights should be tagged as crossing=traffic_signals.
Crosswalks with STOP sign should be tagged as crossing=marked or crossing=uncontrolled.
Is the satellite imagery that shows this is a traffic lights intersection outdated?

Please note that addr:unit tag is intended for..units, suites, apartments, etc. If you want to tag floor number, you can use addr:floor= tag. Please correct his.

You named a feature as "Materials for the Arts (ran by the city)". Is "(ran by the city)" actually part of the name or something you added?

Hello.
You mapped The Collective Paper Factory hotel, however I see that there's already mapped The Paper Factory Hotel. Are these features different?

Hello.
Image tag should be just a url to an image, no html tags or javascript.
name= tag should be just the name of that feature. brand= tag should be separate from name=
phone= tag should always contain country code (+1 for US) and separated only by spaces or - not any other characters like ().

For a business with multiple locations it's also useful to add branch= tag with the name of the given location to easier distinguish between them.

If a business occupies the whole building(such as the case here), it's ok to add the business' tags to the building itself, rather than a separate node like you did. The way you mapped it is not wrong, but another option.

iD editor comes with many preset for different business, this Extra Space Storage is one of them. You could use it to automatically pre-fill many of the common tags between all these business.

If they belong to the same gym or something similar, then I can see that being useful. But just grouping them for the sake of grouping them is not correct.
That's like creating relation of every single sidewalk in NYC...

Please don't misunderstand. I'm not saying those features shouldn't be mapped. By all means, map them and add details with correct tags.
However, in this case I don't see a relation being appropriate just to group them togather.

134225553 almost 3 years ago

Hello.
Please note that relations are not intended to be used as categories. As documented in osm.wiki/Relations_are_not_categories
2 rocks on the opposite side of Central Park on which people climb does not make a useful relation.

Hello.
I'm not sure if water_source=groundwater for hydrants is a correct value. My understand is "groundwater" is for natural water, like in wells. Most our NYC's hydrants are connected to the city pipes network, so perhaps water_source=main is more appropriate.

When editing buildings, please pay attention to nycdoitt:bin= tag. It uniquely identifies each building in NYC and allows to connect it to NYC's buildings database to look up various metadata on it. If you are redrawing a building, please make sure to transfer that tag to the correct feature.

Hello.
When mapping buildings or other features with right angles, you can right click on them and select "Make Square" (shortcut key Q). That will make your mapping look neater and more accurate tot he real world features.

Hello.
I'm not sure parklet is the correct feature here. Based on the wiki's documentation it seems like these are placed in previously-parking spaces.
This feature, based on satellite imagery, seems to be just some grass and 2-3 trees?

Ah, so it's not a single statue but a whole area. It could be mapped as an art gallery instead.
