My first OSM edit

Posted by Laura Vance on 19 May 2009 in English.

Last night I made my first OSM edit, and it was pretty easy. There are a few quirks of the JOSM interface, but once I figured some of them out, it made it faster to edit.

I rode my bicycle to work today on a bike path, so I'll be able to learn how to upload a new path this evening.

Once you have the basics of JOSM, the rest is just a case of learning how to label a node(points), way(joined up node[s] so a line), or relations (collection of nodes/ways).
You label those objects with several key/value pairs, for example 'highway' is a key and the value can be 'primary', 'secondary', 'footway' etc. Often writen by saying "something you walk on is tagged as highway=footway".

For the key/value pairs, just memorise this page
osm.wiki/Map_Features
Or just refer to it when you want to know how to label/tag something (it changes with time anyway).

Speaking of the JOSM editing interface... if a way already exists, and I'm editing it to make it more accurate (huge pieces of twisty road are straight), if I load my GPS trace into JOSM, and then modify the way to follow my trace, do I need to remove my trace before I save my changes back to OSM?

The reason I ask is because I was thinking about it yesterday as I rode my bicycle mapping bike paths on my way home that I've seen some places where there are two ways that are laying on top of each other. Is that what happens when you don't remove your trace before uploading?

Hi,

You should download the current data from the database before you start editing. This means if there is a way you wish to correct is already there you edit the excisting way.

If you start tracing from your GPS and then just upload it you will have two ways that are very near each other, marking the same bit of road.

When you upload no GPS data is sent. The only data that is uploaded is what you have drawn and edited by hand.

Does that help?

I do download the map data into JOSM, but I also load my GPS trace so that I can edit the map directly on top of my trace.

In other words, the OSM data and my trace are in JOSM at the same time. When I save my changes to the OSM map by clicking the upload button, does it upload my trace as well as the OSM data?

I don't add any data to my trace, I just leave it as a "way", so does OSM know to ignore ways that don't have any associated data?

I guess I'll download the section from OSM today and see if my trace is still there. If it is, I'll remove it and save the changes. :) Simple enough.

I was just curious, because I've seen other places with one way directly on top of another way.

I just checked the online editor (edit tab), and sure enough... my trace was sitting there under the way that I edited.... I'll fix it this evening.

Have you uploaded your GPX trace via the "upload" tab? If not, I can't see why your trace should still be visible.

JOSM uploads the map data only
