Changeset When Comment

(To clarify, I recently found: from Morris Street, eastbound traffic has a left lane to the third exit onto Spring Street. Westbound traffic from Morris Street takes the right lane to the first exit onto Spring Street.)

Hey,

I just visited again and there was already some more construction. About a month ago, this was the case that the eastbound exit was cut off there and merged with the west exit. They just made it so that the westbound lane could go to the third exit in the right roundabout lane, and the eastbound one can go to the third exit in the left lane.

I'll update my changes based on these recent findings accordingly.

Thanks for asking, I am not sure of the specific species of those trees. I did place them randomly near node/6796129384 (just because I thought I could map all the trees, haha). I have removed them in place of natural=wood.

I have made those changes in changeset/122438167

Some of the other trees like here node/6796129498 and node/6796129190 are ornamental so I did not intend on randomly placing them. I was not aware that the distinction of trees wasn't as useful unless there are other details or they are ornamental (I have seen parking lots in other areas like that with organized tree layouts).

The former. Just a sequential number.

I don't know the official name but I think the general name is Paramus Inspection Station. I've made the change to the name/operator in changeset/114194682.

Hi MxxCon,

Thanks for your helpful advice!

- I was wondering how to tag something like this automated ticket dispenser. Because it's not a full-blown shop for tickets, it's more of a vending machine, I agree with this tagging convention. I saw on the wiki/taginfo (https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/vending#values) that vending could be "tickets" or "admission_tickets". I don't think it's "parking_tickets" per se because you drive to the station (big building) and that's when you give the ticket to the inspector. Which one do you think is better?

- I knew about the abbreviation rule for streets. I think what you mean here is that it should be used on place names as well. (NJMVC should be New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission).

Although, I'm not sure if it should be expanded in the name tag because the wiki says
> Do not construct names for features[2] by combining the name of an enclosing feature with a description. ... A feature named 'Smith Fountain' within 'XYZ Park' should be tagged name=Smith Fountain but not name=XYZ Park Smith Fountain.

So perhaps because the name isn't appropriate, I should give the inspection node tags of name=Paramus Inspection Station and operator=New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission?

Hi Joel, thanks for pointing that out! I saw your edit, which still conveys the information, and the rule is more clear to me now. I'll keep that in mind in the future.

Hi Canal des Pangalanes,
Thanks! I actually meant to use man_made=gantry, my mistake. I made up this tag, I suppose it does have the advantage that it specifies which type of gantry it is, like highway=toll_gantry.

I can see your point for trees that it causes a support burden. Here's a compromise: what I can do is map less trees. Instead of at streets or in forests (where there are bound to be many trees), I can map them at open parks or outdoor spaces, since there are less of these and there are many less trees to maintain. And there are some well-known trees at botanical gardens that have a bunch of detail on them, like what species they are. Those I think are worth maintaining. https://reddit.com/r/openstreetmap/comments/arta10/what_is_the_proper_use_of_tree_points/egqjnnr/
This is useful since it's used in OSM projects such as TreeMap: https://ocsidlab.github.io/treemap/#16/12.9800/77.6400

As for the house numbers and other features including towers (node/7529907430/history) and disabled parking spaces (node/7326425068/history), I think these should not have been deleted in the same changeset, as these don't change (like every 6 years), unlike trees.

What do you think?

Hi dpawlyk,

I'm not sure how removing random trees improves the map. There was also some other data like house numbers that was removed from this changeset as well that wasn't described in this changeset comment. I personally surveyed the data myself and used recent Mapbox imagery to trace them, so I think they shouldn't be removed.
One of the principles of OSM is to not change data to make the map look pretty, i.e. don't map for the renderer: osm.wiki/Tagging_for_the_renderer. Also, OSM is a collection of data, not just a map, and so having the information about trees or house numbers might be useful for a field planner, for instance: osm.org/about

Could you please explain what you were trying to accomplish with this changeset? Did you observe these trees not existing 3 months ago?

Also, for future reference, in Ridgewood, the Bing imagery you used is not as recent as the Mapbox Satellite imagery, so maybe take a look at that when making future edits.

The changeset comment would be: Add more stores, drinking fountains, and restrooms to AMC Garden State 16 (local knowledge)
There's a glitch whenever I edit the changeset comment and the iOS keyboard shows up. It crashes the app and won't let me upload.

The changeset details were eaten up, this is probably a bug in Go Map! (It was the 10th changeset with this version and a rating dialog popped up.) This should've said "Fix lanes on Prospect Street, fix service road lanes (thanks jyotkuma for pointing out the 1-way street!), and add things to Town and Country service road". Sources are Mapillary and Mapbox Satellite.

Bing StreetSide is another source. JOSM kept eating that up before I uploaded and I forgot to check that.

I wanted to add Bing Streetside and survey to the source but JOSM for some reason didn't remember that before I clicked upload. So I'm adding it here.

By the way, I do know the town pretty well (I only used the Bing street imagery as a reference), it's just that I wasn't aware of this feature (multiple businesses in one building) from the buildings in the area.

70546811 over 6 years ago

Hi pwhite119,
Thank you for the tips. I was aware of that when I was doing my edits, because the businesses near North Broad Street are points and not buildings because they are all part of 1 large building.
I was not aware that some of the places on the other streets (for example, It's Greek to Me) were part of a larger building. I thought they were separate. Sometimes that's not obvious from the street imagery. I did not know that most of the retail buildings in this part of Ridgewood had multiple businesses in them.
I can understand making the buildings square. I wasn't aware that was common practice though, since some of the buildings have different shapes to them, like houses and the Bow Tie Warner Theater, which opens up at a weird position (I could make the building square, then move the points that have different positions). What's annoying is that the iD editor sometimes resizes the square from its original size. I saw that JOSM can make square buildings and automate other tasks easily with plugins. I'm still learning how to use it, as there's a lot to it.
Thank you for your corrections. I looked at those.
