Multipolygons

Posted by Hans van Wijk on 28 August 2008 in English.

I created one multipolygon outer object en lots of small islands inside. I'm really anxious to see how that works out in the maps in a couple of days! There is still a lot more to do, but before I do that, I want to see the result so far.

An instant preview option would be nice in Potlach!

There are 2 main programmes that make the maps on OSM. The main (and visually nicer map) is called Mapnik, and is what you see by default. But there is another map, Osmarender. You can access it by clicking on the + to the right of the map, and selecting Osmarender. It's updated regularly by people at home by the tiles@home project. Usually changes show up after about an hour on osmarender.

Hi! Yeah, I knew about the OSMarender map and it does render faster, but I think more in the line of a day then an hour, by my experience. But Mapnik is, as you said, definitely doing a better job.

Still: a button that gives you an instant preview of your work would be a great enhancement. It doesn't have to zoom or pan or anything; just a preview map in the setting that the edit map is in at the time, would do nicely.

Instant preview: as it turns out it already exists! Kosmos it's called and it's actually in the wiki. Make your changes: start Kosmos, get the map in your viewport, get OSM data, a few clicks more and presto! Now if it shows the same stuff as Mapnik is going to next wednesday, I'm happy.
